It's not the cost of the bus. It's the cost of the tires.

Tires for a 62-year-old highway coach. How hard could it be?

Pretty hard, as it turns out.

Finding appropriate tires for Horton meant learning more about commercial tire retreading than I ever expected to know. Casings, closed shoulders, ribbed treads, retread shops that have casings but no tread options, retailers working everything out by phone, and quotes they sometimes can't honor. Claude budgeted $2,100. The real number was $4,500. More than the bus.

Episode 3 is up. Horton now has six Firestone FS561A tires and should be safe to climb the Rockies.

Coming up — shakedown drive livestream May 8, 10am Pacific. First time getting Horton out for anything but a double clutch training session. We're going to find out if I can double clutch and if the livestreaming rig will work...
